Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum

The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the lightship basket tradition. In the mid-19th century, Nantucket seamen stationed for months at a time aboard lightships anchored miles from the Nantucket shore began making lightship baskets. This distinctive basket form includes four key components reminiscent of barrels made by whaling-industry coopers: wooden bottoms, shaped weaving over molds, cane from the Pacific and rims secured with nails. Contemporary lightship basket-makers continue to include these original components in their intricate and innovative designs. Recognized internationally as a Nantucket icon, lightship baskets express the island’s authentic cultural artistic tradition.

The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum is proud to educate the public about this rich tradition. Every year, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum displays a new exhibit of antique and contemporary lightship baskets, most of which are borrowed from private collections. With your support, they will continue to “weave Nantucket’s past to its future.”

Along with an array of lectures and programs, the museum’s feature exhibit this season, “Through the Collector’s Eye,” runs from May 25 through Oct. 6.

On July 28 the museum presents “Baskets and Bubbly: A Champagne Brunch and Auction” at the Westmoor Club. Reservations required due to limited seating. For reservations and more information, please call 508-228-1177 or visit www.nantucketlightshipbasketmuseum.org.
